Tradition and Celebration in Libya's medina
Tripoli's Ancient Medina, Libya
The streets of the Ancient Medina of Tripoli in Libya, bubble with life throughout the Mawlid Festivities, when Muslim believers celebrate the birth of Prophet Mohammed which comes on the rabi’ al-awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar. Though some Muslims believe there should be no celebration, various people coming from different communities and regions mainly Northern and Central Africa living in Libya celebrate their own Mawlid in their community. The most colourful and spectacular though, are the celebrations organized by the Libyans themselves, who dress in pure white silk and ceremonial reds praising the Prophet by reciting verses and singing praises along with the tempo of different percussion instruments and the smell of exotic incense aromas.
